My newest project:
I’m really digging the fact that grass doesn’t need any particular substrate to grow on. Coming up next: Grass shirt!
I also want to make a moebius lawn. I recently bought 50 feet of acrylic felt from mcmaster for a pittance and have some grass that’s growing very happily on a test strip in my kitchen. I have to design a good holder for the moebius strip, and then it’s planting time!
I was going through old pictures and found some that made me smile.
Right before I went to Mexico, I stayed up all night packing and getting ready. I had barely slept the night before, either, and I was getting more and more sleep-stupid. Jesse and Jessica were somewhere in the northeast, so I had the house to myself. I decided to start putting on Jesse’s hats and set up banks of lights so I could admire the various shadows they made.
At some point, I remember thinking “wow, this would make a great instructable” so while the sun was coming up, I took lots of photos of my hat-wearing shadow. I have no idea what the instructable was supposed to be about, but the photos remain.
In an ideal world, I would discover while reading their blog that they secretly wear my clothes when I’m away. Sigh*******************
So, I finally put my undergrad thesis into a read-able form, and it’s now available here for your viewing delight. As technical papers go, this one is definitely hanging out on the cute+awesome side of things–I designed a pretty nice oscilloscope that fits in the palm of your hand and spent so much time getting the design done that I didn’t work on the paper at all. With just a few days left before graduation (and needing to get this done to graduate), I balked at the thought of writing another boring 60 page paper–it just didn’t seem like a very cool thing to do. With 48 hours left before the deadline, I bought a wacom drawing tablet and a lot of espresso and started drawing my cartoon thesis.
After an exhausting and wrist-cramping 48 hours sitting and drawing, I had 24 pages of little electrical components shouting at eachother. I turned it in with 30 seconds left, not caring if MIT wouldn’t accept a cartoon in place of a technical paper.
To my pleasant surprise, it went over well, everyone thought it was pretty cute (and politely didn’t comment on my drawing ability). So, yeah. Enjoy it.
As an aside, I’m actually starting to think about finalizing and selling the ‘scope. I’ve gotten better at organizing electronic projects in the last year, and I think this would kick some serious ass. I’m working on another pretty cool consumer/hobbyist electronic product right now, but I’m aiming for that to be selling within two months, and then I’ll move on to the scope. Woo hoo!
Aptera Motors buzzed by Idealab today, causing panic in the streets as everybody in Pasadena scrambled to grab their cameras. The streets were literally clogged with people taking pictures of this thing.
And what a thing it is! It’s definitely a car-o’-the-future dealie. I’m putting it down on my wish list, right after ‘pony’
